Rwanda’s Minister of Infrastructure, Dr. Jimmy Gasore, chaired a high-level meeting bringing together key development partners on May 13, 2025, to reaffirm commitment and accelerate the implementation of the Ruzizi III Regional Hydropower Project.

The meeting was attended by the Ruzizi III Energy Limited Project Director, the Ambassadors of the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the European Union to Rwanda, and Energie des Grands Lacs (EGL), among others. They reiterated their support for the Ruzizi III project and emphasized their readiness to collaborate for its successful implementation.

This landmark initiative is critical to strengthening regional energy integration and enhancing sustainable power generation for the CEPGL countries (Burundi, DRC, and Rwanda).

The Minister of Infrastructure also emphasized the importance of the Ruzizi III Project, reiterating that the Ruzizi III Project is more than just a power generation project. He said that it is a symbol of shared prosperity and collective ambition for a resilient and interconnected energy future in the region.

Ruzizi III Energy Limited (REL) is a special purpose vehicle that has been established and registered in Rwanda to develop the Ruzizi III Regional Hydroelectric project (Project). It is a key development project and will be one of the largest infrastructure projects in the region comprising Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern DR Congo. It is the first privately financed project in sub-Saharan Africa that will utilise a common regional water resource to generate power that will be shared equally between three countries.
