From 21–23 May 2025, a coordination meeting for the Ruzizi III Regional Hydropower Project was held in Nairobi. It brought together representatives from Ruzizi III Energy Limited (REL), Energie des Grands Lacs (EGL), the Project’s lenders, Project Sponsors (IPS Kenya & SN Power), and the Contracting States of Burundi, DR Congo, and Rwanda.

The discussions focused on reviewing current progress and identifying practical steps to accelerate implementation. Once completed, the 206 MW Ruzizi III Project will provide clean, renewable energy to the region, significantly reducing reliance on expensive thermal generation and supporting efforts to transition away from traditional biomass fuels such as wood and charcoal, major drivers of deforestation and biodiversity loss.

We appreciate all stakeholders’ continued collaboration and commitment in advancing this transformative regional project.

Ruzizi III Energy Limited (REL) is a special purpose vehicle that has been established and registered in Rwanda to develop the Ruzizi III Regional Hydroelectric project (Project). It is a key development project and will be one of the largest infrastructure projects in the region comprising Rwanda, Burundi, and eastern DR Congo. It is the first privately financed project in sub-Saharan Africa that will utilise a common regional water resource to generate power that will be shared equally between three countries.
