At the recently concluded Global Engineering Conference (GECO) in Kigali, held from October 15-18, 2024, the Project Director of Ruzizi III Energy Limited (REL), Mohsin Tahir, alongside a team of panelists, emphasized the importance of affordable and clean energy in advancing communities, as outlined in Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7). They highlighted the Ruzizi III Regional Hydropower Project’s role in this initiative once it becomes operational.
The session, moderated by REL, centered on SDG7 and the need for affordable and clean energy under the conference theme, “Engineering Innovations for a Sustainable Future.” Panelists included the Head of Infrastructure at IPS Aleem Karmali, SN Power COO Oystein Lillelland, Chair of the Energy Committee of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations Marie-Line Vaiani, Senior Energy Specialist at the World Bank Laurencia Njagi, and the Director General of Energy at the Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA) Jean Bosco Mugiraneza. They discussed the importance of institutional contributions to achieving cleaner and more affordable energy solutions.
Prior to the panel discussion, Aleem Karmali and Kassana Leonard from REL shared insights into the Ruzizi III Regional Hydropower Project as a practical model for sustainable energy in the Great Lakes region. They highlighted the project’s potential as a blueprint for future development initiatives, emphasizing the importance of public-private partnerships.
